Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation in Mississauga
The product Foamworks installs on most residential, commercial, and agricultural jobs
Closed-cell spray foam is a two-part polyurethane system that expands to a dense, rigid foam with a mostly sealed cell structure. That structure is what separates it from open-cell foam and from fibreglass or cellulose: it insulates at roughly R-6 to R-6.5 per inch, acts as an air barrier at about one inch of thickness, and functions as a vapour retarder once installed at roughly two inches or more, depending on the specific product and the assembly it’s installed in. Foamworks uses closed-cell foam as its standard product across residential, commercial, and agricultural work because it performs well in the range of conditions those buildings present: damp basements and crawl spaces, exterior walls exposed to wind-driven rain, and agricultural buildings where humidity and condensation are constant.
How it compares to open-cell foam
Open-cell spray foam is softer, less dense, and roughly half the R-value per inch of closed-cell foam. It’s cheaper and it’s a better sound dampener, but it isn’t a vapour retarder and it can absorb water rather than shed it, which makes it a poor fit for basements, crawl spaces, and exterior applications where moisture exposure is likely. Foamworks will discuss open-cell foam where it’s the right fit for a project — typically interior partition walls for sound control — but it isn’t the default recommendation for exterior assemblies.
Where closed-cell foam is used
- Basement and crawl space walls, where moisture control matters as much as R-value
- Exterior wall assemblies in both new construction and retrofits
- Attics and roofline assemblies, particularly unvented “hot roof” designs
- Garages, especially attached garages where air sealing against the house matters
- Agricultural buildings, where condensation on the underside of metal roofing is a common cause of corrosion and rot
- Commercial and industrial buildings needing both thermal performance and structural rigidity, since cured closed-cell foam adds meaningful racking strength to a wall assembly
Density and lift thickness matter as much as the product
Closed-cell foam has to be sprayed within a specific density range and applied in controlled lifts — usually no more than about two inches per pass — to cure properly. Spraying too thick in one pass traps heat inside the foam as it reacts, which can scorch the core or cause it to shrink and pull away from framing as it cools. This is one of the reasons Foamworks trains crews specifically on application technique rather than treating spray foam as a material any insulation contractor can apply the same way as batts or blown-in cellulose.

Frequently Asked Questions
In applications where air sealing and moisture control matter (rim joists, basements, additions, agricultural buildings), yes, because it’s doing three jobs (insulating, air sealing, and moisture control) in one material. In a simple interior wall with no moisture or air-leakage concerns, the extra cost is harder to justify.
Generally no, once installed at sufficient thickness, though this depends on the specific assembly and local code requirements. Foamworks confirms this on a per-project basis rather than applying a blanket rule.
It doesn’t settle, sag, or lose R-value over time the way some other insulation types can, and it isn’t a food source for pests. Its practical lifespan is generally tied to the building itself rather than the material degrading on its own.
